Protein Drinks: Are they Good for You?
The body needs 20 different amino acids to make protein for the tip-top growth. Amino acids help your body be healthier by building up your muscles, hair and nails, your blood supply, skin and other internal organs.
The human body can create 12 of the necessary amino acids, the remainder need to come from the foods you eat. These are known as the essential amino acids; the 12 made by the body are called non-essential amino acids.
A well-balanced diet contains the necessary amino acids the body needs and then some. The body needs both essential and non-essential amino acids for tissue protein synthesis.
Many body builders and those in other sports are often trying to build muscle mass. In order to add more protein to their diet they often add protein shakes.
A lot of exercising decreases the proteins in the muscles. In order for the muscles to repair themselves after exercise they need the protein replaced. This can be solved by eating; however, more food intake means more calorie intake which can lead to excessive fat, which in turn increases heath issues such as heart disease.
Do protein drinks help this situation?
Based on the above facts, most doctors would say no. Instead, the advice that many family doctors would offer and agree upon would be that exercise and a balanced diet is the best way to get muscle mass and bone strength.
Additionally, FDA approval is not required for protein drinks to be on shelves. There are also continued questions regarding the long term use of these shakes and supplements. Safety issues are still a mystery.
Some reports on using protein shakes suggest a link to rapid aging effects and health issues. Too much protein is known to be a factor in kidney stones and other health issues.
However, someone who is trying to build muscle mass and exercising often will find it very difficult to get enough protein into their system help aid muscle growth. This is where protein drinks help – as part of a good healthy diet to help boost the amount of quality protein you ingest.
